Control Room Design
Think Systems specialise in the successful design, development, and commissioning of control rooms through a structured programme of ergonomics and Human Factors (HF) activities. Our approach ensures that control room environments meet operational needs, optimise user experience, and integrate seamlessly with existing systems and teams.
Key Services Offered:
- Control Room Integration: Design and develop environments that effectively embed new teams into existing or new control rooms. This includes addressing physical, social, and decision-making factors to enhance team collaboration and performance.
- Environmental Impact Assessment: Account for the impact of control room design on physical space, acoustics, air handling, and lighting within open-plan environments, ensuring the space is conducive to effective communication and operator well-being.
- Stakeholder-Centric Design: Ensure the control room meets the diverse needs of all users, including controllers, signallers, and other key personnel, to optimise workflow, safety, and operational efficiency.
Key Ergonomic Activities Included:
- Ergonomic Integration Plan (EIP): Develop an EIP to outline how ergonomics principles will be incorporated throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring user-centred design and operational excellence.
- Scenario-Based Task Analysis (SBTA): Conduct SBTA to assess how real-world tasks will be performed within the control room environment, ensuring that design decisions enhance task efficiency and reduce operator strain.
- Day in the Life of (DITLO): Utilise DITLO analysis to capture user experiences and needs over time, ensuring the control room design supports daily operational demands.
- Environmental Review and Assessment: Perform a detailed review of environmental factors such as lighting, acoustics, and space utilisation to ensure optimal conditions for all control room users.
- 3D Control Room and Workstation Layout Design: Use of software to design control room layouts and workstation setups, ensuring ergonomic principles are applied to optimise operator comfort, efficiency, and safety.
- RAIDO Register: Manage project risks, assumptions, issues, dependencies, and opportunities (RAIDO) to track and mitigate challenges throughout the design and commissioning process.
Additional Competencies:
- Workshop Facilitation and Stakeholder Engagement: Lead workshops and engage with stakeholders to gather feedback, ensuring that the design process is collaborative and aligned with operational requirements.
- Data Analysis and Reporting: Conduct detailed analysis of data from assessments, providing clear recommendations for improving control room design and workflow.
Our control room design services ensure that environments are tailored to meet the needs of all users, integrate effectively into existing operations, and enhance both performance and safety. Through the application of ergonomic and HF principles, we support the creation of workspaces that optimise operator well-being and operational success.
