Human Factors Integration for Rail Infrastructure Programmes

Think Systems specialise in establishing and maintaining a coordinated approach to Human Factors (HF) across large-scale rail infrastructure programmes, ensuring that design and operational processes support safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Our focus is on embedding HF principles from the early stages of the project lifecycle, optimising outcomes across multiple stakeholders and diverse operational environments.

Key Services Offered:

  • Human Factors Coordination: Lead the integration of HF across a large rail infrastructure programme, supporting the successful implementation of core infrastructure works while aligning with Prevention through Design (PtD) principles to minimise risks from the outset.
  • Enterprise Approach to Delivery: Facilitate the transition towards a fully integrated ‘enterprise’ approach, ensuring coordinated delivery across multiple parties, including rail infrastructure teams, train operating companies, and digital interfaces. This approach ensures seamless collaboration and enhances system-wide safety and efficiency.
  • Interface Management: Manage complex interfaces between various stakeholders, including contractors, rail operating companies, and regulatory bodies, ensuring that HF principles are effectively integrated into all phases of the programme. This includes identifying and resolving potential conflicts and promoting collaboration across teams.
  • Requirements Management: Oversee the identification, management, and traceability of HF requirements throughout the project lifecycle. This ensures that the needs of all stakeholders are met, and HF considerations are integrated into design and operational processes.
  • Verification and Validation (V&V): Support the V&V process to ensure that designs and systems meet both safety standards and operational requirements. This includes validating Human Factors considerations in designs, processes, and systems, ensuring they are fit for purpose and meet the needs of end users.
  • Baseline Workload Assessments: Conduct baseline workload assessments to evaluate the potential impact of new infrastructure on operational capacity, safety, and performance. This helps ensure that designs and processes are optimised to support efficient and safe operation.

Our expertise in HF integration ensures that rail infrastructure projects are designed, developed, and delivered with a focus on user-centric solutions, safety, and operational efficiency. By maintaining a coordinated approach across multiple stakeholders and phases of the project, we drive success in large-scale rail programmes, helping to improve safety, performance, and sustainability across the network.
